Origin: First granted in 1721, the town was named after Samuel Allen, governor of the province in the late 1600's. A portion of Bow was
annexed in 1815, and a portion of Hooksett in 1853. Home of Bear Brook State Park, the area was once known as excellent bear country, and a
good hunting ground for wild geese and ducks.

Population Trends: Allenstown's population more than tripled over fifty years, going from 1,540 residents in 1950 to 4,843 in 2000, increasing by a total of 3,303 residents. Population growth rates in Allenstown hit a high of 61 percent between 1970-1980, but have sharply
dropped since, posting six percent growth between 1980-1990, and only four percent between 1990-2000. The 2004 Census estimate for Allenstown was 4,970 residents, which ranked 65th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
