Origin: This town was settled prior to the American Revolution, but did not get its incorporated name until 1777. It was named for County Antrim
in Ireland, which was the native home of the land’s owner, Philip Riley. The town was home to the now-defunct Nathaniel Hawthorne College.
Population, Year of the First Census Taken: 528 residents in 1790
Population Trends: Antrim's population has grown slowly over the last five decades, increasing by less than ten percent every decade except 1960-1970, when the population grew by 89 percent. The lowest growth rate was four percent, which occurred between both 1970-1980 and 1990-2000. Antrim's population grew from 1,030 in 1950 to 2,449 in
2000, a total increase of 1,419 residents. The 2004 Census estimate for Antrim was 2,546 residents, which ranked 113th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns. Population Density, 2004: 71.4 persons per square mile of land area. Antrim contains 35.7 square miles of land area and 0.8 square miles of inland water area.
