Origin: Once part of Chester, it was known as Chester Woods, Chester West Parish, Long Meadow, and then Auburn. The name comes from
English literature by Goldsmith, as did Auburns in New York, Massachusetts, and Maine. Auburn includes a large portion of Lake Massabesic,water supply for the City of Manchester.

Population Trends: Population growth rates in Auburn have been above thestatewide average over four of the last five decades. Decennial growth rates rangedfrom a 12 percent increase between 1950-1960 to a 58 percent increase between 1960-1970. Over fifty years, Auburn's population grew by a total of 3,524 residents, quadrupling in size from 1,158 residents in 1950 to 4,682 residents in 2000. The 2004
Census estimate for Auburn was 5,037, which ranked 62nd among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
