Origin: Named for an English admiral, Edward Boscawen, who fought under General Amherst in the conquest of Canada. One of the first log
forts was located here. The Contoocook Fort on the Merrimack, built in 1739, was used for protection against the Indians. Boscawen includes
the village of Gerrish, and is home to the State Veterans Cemetery.
Population, Year of the First Census Taken: 1,108 residents in 1790
Population Trends: After growing by 45 percent between 1960-1970, Boscawen's rate of population growth has trailed off, growing by nine percent, then four percent, and growing by only two percent between 1990-2000. Boscawen's population nearly doubled in the fifty year period, going from 1,857 residents in 1950 to 3,672 in 2000, a numeric increase
of 1,815 residents. The 2004 Census estimate for Boscawen was 3,813 residents, which ranked 96th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
