Origin: One of several towns established in the Merrimack Valley to alleviate population congestion in the seacoast, which formed a 'bow' on
the map. There is also a bend in the Merrimack River within its borders, and the name Bow may have come from either source. Bow is the
birthplace of Mary Baker Eddy, founder of the First Church of Christ, Scientist and leader of the Christian Science movement.
Population, Year of the First Census Taken: 568 residents in 1790
Population Trends: Since 1950, the town of Bow has experienced population growth well above the statewide average rate. Decennial growth rates ranged from a 26 percent increase between 1950-1960 to an 85 percent increase between 1960-1970. Bow’s 2000 population of 7,138 was more than six and a half times larger than the 1950 population of 1,062, a total increase of 6,076 residents. The 2004 Census estimate for
Bow was 7,961 residents, which ranked 38th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
