Origin: Once a part of Chester, the town was known as Charmingfare, probably because of the many bridle paths or parades through pleasant
scenery. It was named Candia in 1763 by Governor Benning Wentworth, possibly in memory of his sea travels following his graduation from
Harvard. Candia was the name of the principal city of Crete.

Population Trends: Over fifty years, Candia had a moderate population increase, with three decades of above average growth followed by two decades of below average growth. Decennial growth rates ranged from ten percent between 1990-2000 to fifty percent between 1970-1980. Candia's population increased by a total of 2,668 residents, going from
1,243 in 1950 to 3,911 in 2000. The 2004 Census estimate for Candia was 4,143 residents, which ranked 90th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
