Origin: Chichester is one of seven towns granted in 1727 when New Hampshire was still a part of Massachusetts. As were several other towns,
it was named in honor of Thomas Pelham Holles, Duke of Newcastle, Earl of Chichester, and England’s Secretary of State.
Population, Year of the First Census Taken: 491 residents in 1790
Population Trends: Chichester's population grew three times larger over the last fifty years, growing above the statewide average rate over four of the last five decades. Decennial growth rates ranged from 12 percent between 1950-1960 to 38 percent between 1970-1980. Chichester's 1950 population of 735 increased by 1,501 residents, reaching 2,236 residents by the 2000 Census. The 2004 Census estimate for Chichester was 2,482 residents, which ranked 116th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities
