Incorporated: 1766
Origin: Once a parish of Nottingham, Deerfield was incorporated as a town in 1766. It was named for Deerfield, Massachusetts, home of
several early settlers. The town was home to John Simpson, who achieved fame by firing the first shot in the revolution, disobeying orders
not to fire "until you see the whites of their eyes."
Population, Year of the First Census Taken: 1,619 residents in 1790
Population Trends: Deerfield's population grew more than five times larger over fifty years, going from 706 residents in 1950 to 3,678 in 2000, a total increase of 2,972 residents. Decennial growth rates were above average for four of the five decades, the exception a one percent increase between 1950-1960, and the largest growth a 68 percent increase between 1970-1980. The 2004 Census estimate for Deerfield was 4,019 residents, which
ranked 91st among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
