Incorporated: 1774

Origin: Granted in 1774 by Governor John Wentworth, the town was named Deering, the family name of his wife, Frances Deering Wentworth.
At the time of the Revolution, John and Frances Wentworth left for Nova Scotia, then went to England, where Frances became a lady-in-waiting
to Queen Charlotte, wife of George III.
Population, Year of the First Census Taken: 928 residents in 1790
Population Trends: Like many New Hampshire communities, Deering lost population between 1950-1960, then grew rapidly over the next three decades. Decennial population growth rates ranged from a 12 percent decrease between 1950-1960 to an 80 percent increase between 1970-1980. Deering grew by 1,483 residents over fifty years, going from 392 in 1950 to 1,875 residents in 2000. The 2004 Census estimate for Deering was 1,985 residents, which ranked 140th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
