Origin: Named for Frances Deering Wentworth, wife of Governor John Wentworth. Situated on the Second New Hampshire Turnpike, the sole
route between Boston and Vermont, the town once collected a toll of one cent per mile from travelling coaches and wagons. Francestown was
also the site of a high-quality soapstone quarry, which was mined until the 1890's.

Population Trends: Population in Francestown grew above the statewide average rate over four of the last five decades. Decennial growth rates ranged from a six percent increase between 1960-1970 to a 58 percent increase between 1970-1980. Over fifty years, Francestown's population grew by a total of 1,075 residents, going from 405 in 1950 to 1,480 residents in 2000. The 2004 Census estimate for Francestown was
