Incorporated: 1791

Origin: First settled in 1753 by the Lynde family, the town was known as Lyndeborough Addition. The Monadnock hills cut residents off from
church and school, so in 1791 they petitioned for the right to form their own town. The name was chosen to indicate the town's location on a
level, fertile ground between the hills. Greenfield is home to the Crotched Mountain Foundation, a rehabilitation center for handicapped children;
the Crotched Mountain Ski Area; and Greenfield State Park, on Otter Lake.
Population, Year of the First Census Taken: 934 residents in 1800
Population Trends: Decennial population growth rates in Greenfield ranged from an eight percent decrease between 1970-1980, the third largest decrease in that decade, to a 97 percent increase between 1960-1970, the eleventh largest increase for that decade. Greenfield's population increased by a total of 1,227 residents, going from 430 in 1950 to 1,657 residents in 2000. The 2004 Census estimate for Greenfield was 1,724 residents, which ranked 149th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
