Origin: Hancock started as an unidentified settlement on the Contoocook River, in lands known as "Society land" or Cumberland, which had
been reserved for the proprietors of the lands which became New Hampshire. First settled in 1764, the town was named Hancock in 1779 in
honor of John Hancock, first governor of Massachusetts, president of the Continental Congress, and signer of the Declaration of Independence.
Population, Year of the First Census Taken: 634 residents in 1790
Population Trends: Hancock's population growth was slightly above the statewide average over four of the last five decades, nearly tripling the population. Decennial growth rates ranged from eight percent between 1990-2000 to 34 percent between 1980-1990. Over fifty years, Hancock's population increased by a total of 1,127 residents, going from 612 in 1950 to 1,739 in 2000. The 2004 Census estimate for Hancock was 1,802 residents, which ranked 144th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
