Incorporated: 1772

Origin: First granted in 1735 by Governor Jonathan Belcher of Massachusetts as Number 7, one in a line of nine towns set up as defense
barriers against Indian attacks. The towns were renamed following the 1741 establishment of New Hampshire as a separate province. In 1748,
the town was named for Wills Hill, Earl of Hillsborough, as was Hillsborough County, created in 1769 by Governor John Wentworth.
Hillsborough is the birthplace of Franklin Pierce, fourteenth President of the United States, the only President from New Hampshire.
Population, Year of the First Census Taken: 798 residents in 1790
Population Trends: Hillsborough's population grew slightly below the statewide average rate over four of the last five decades. Decennial growth rates ranged from a six percent increase between 1950-1960 to a 31 percent increase between 1980-1990. Over fifty years, Hillsborough's population increased by a total of 2,749 residents, going from 2,179 in 1950 to 4,928 residents in 2000. The 2004 Census estimate for Hillsborough was 5,274 residents, which ranked 60th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
