Incorporated: 1822

Origin: First known as Chester Woods and Rowe's Corner, this town was called Hooksett for nearly fifty years before being incorporated. The
name may have come from a hook-shaped island in the Merrimack or from early fishermen, who called the area Hookline Falls. Rocky ledges
flank the Merrimack River, and there were several cross-river ferries located here, as well as lumber mills and a brick-making establishment
powered by the falls. In 1794, the lottery-funded Hooksett Canal became part of the transportation facilities of the Amoskeag cotton mills in
Manchester.
Population, Year of the First Census Taken: 880 residents in 1830
Population Trends: Hooksett's population has grown more than four times larger over fifty years, growing at or above the statewide average over each decade. Decennial growth ranged from a twenty percent increase between 1980-1990 to a fifty percent increase between 1960-1970. Hooksett's population increased by a total of 8,929 residents, going
from 2,792 in 1950 to 11,721 residents in 2000. The 2004 Census estimate for Hooksett was 13,064 residents, which ranked 20th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
Population Density, 2004: 361.0 persons per square mile of land area. Hooksett contains 36.2 square miles of land area and 0.9 square miles of inland water area. Villages and Place Names: Martin, Martins Corner, Rowes Corner, South Hooksett, Martins Ferry
