Incorporated: 1753
Origin: First granted in 1735 as Upper Ashuelot to soldiers in the wars against Canada, and intended to be a fort town. Establishment of the
Massachusetts-New Hampshire boundary in 1753 made it one of the largest towns in New England. Under regrant by the New Hampshire
governor, the town was named Keene, in honor of Sir Benjamin Keene of England, an associate of Governor Wentworth in the Spanish West
Indies trade. Keene was incorporated as a city in 1873, and is home to Keene State College.
Population, Year of the First Census Taken: 1,314 residents in 1790
Population Trends: Even though it is one of the larger communities, Keene's population grew well below the statewide average over each of the last five decades. Decennial growth rates ranged from one percent between 1990-2000 to 17 percent between 1960-1970. Keene's population increased by a total of 6,925 residents between the 1950 count
of 15,638 and 2000's count of 22,563 residents. The 2004 Census estimate for Keene was 22,955 residents, which ranked 11th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
Population Density, 2004: 619.6 persons per square mile of land area. Keene contains 37.1 square miles of land area and 0.2 square miles of inland water area.
