Incorporated: 1782
Origin: For many years prior to its 1782 incorporation, this town was an unnamed parish of Chichester. Like Pittsburg in the north, Pittsfield was named for William Pitt, Prime Minister of England, and a great friend of the Colonies prior to the American Revolution. The town was settled by several families originally from Hampton.

Population Trends: Pittsfield's population grew steadily over the last five decades, but below the statewide average rate. Decennial growth rates ranged from a four percent increase between both 1950-1960 and 1960-1970 to a 28 percent increase between 1980-1990. Pittsfield grew by a total of 1,610 residents over fifty years, going from 2,321 in 1950 to 3,931 residents in 2000. The 2004 Census estimate for Pittsfield was 4,319 residents, which ranked 85th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
Population Density, 2004: 179.1 persons per square mile of land area. Pittsfield contains 24.1 square miles of land area and 0.2 square miles of inland water area.
