Origin: Originally a part of Boscawen, this town was named for Daniel Webster, famous American lawyer and statesman. Webster served as Secretary of State during the administrations of Presidents Harrison, Tyler, and Fillmore. Mount Webster and Webster Lake were also named for him.
Population, Year of the First Census Taken: 689 residents in 1870
Population Trends: Webster's population grew above the statewide average rate over the last five decades, growing over four times larger. Decennial growth rates reached a high of 61 percent between 1970-1980; the lowest was a 12 percent increase between 1990-2000. Webster's population increased by a total of 1,193 residents, going from 386 in 1950 to 1,579 residents in 2000. The 2004 Census estimate for Webster was 1,777 residents, which ranked 145th among New Hampshire's incorporated cities and towns.
